The Natural Rat

Raw Vegan Rat Diet

Here's how I feed my rats a raw vegan diet.

Choose from the following:-

Fruit eg. Berries, apple, pear, pomegranate, plum etc

Vegetables eg. tomato, peas, cabbage, kale, pumpkin family, carrot, broccoli, cauliflower etc

Raw wholegrains, dry or sprouted eg. whole spelt, barley, buckwheat, oats, wild rice, I make a dry mix consisting of organic wholegrain, seeds, berries, vegetables, home-made cereal bix and protein rich crackers, a few nuts & herbs

Nuts are served as whole nuts in the shell. Nuts are also good soaked as this makes them easier to digest eg. hazelnuts, brazil, macademia, almond, walnut etc

Seeds like pumpkin, sesame, flax, hemp, sunflower etc

Sea vegetables eg. dulse, wakame, nori, kombu, carrageen

Algaes eg. blue green algae, spirulina, chlorella

Grass powders eg. wheatgrass, barleygrass, spelt grass

You can serve most raw foods in whole form but I also like to make the following type of foods for my rats which they really enjoy. My recipes help to provide interest and variety for my rats and can provide dense nutrition.

Basic raw ingredients can be made into cakes, cookies, burgers, smoothies, porridges, milks, nut butters etc If you have a dehdyrator you can also create your own cereal bix and crackers. See 'Raw Vegan Recipes For Rats' (coming soon)

I find that any poorly and elderly rats benefit mostly from raw food preparations such as blended milks, desserts, soaked raw crackers, porridges etc. (I cover this in detail in 'Holistic Care of The Elderly Rat).

It's healthier to feed a diet that is low in sugar and fat ie minimise bananas, corn, dried fruit, nut butters. I do not feed soya apart from a little miso very occasionally. In this case, it is made from organic non GM soya beans and has been fermented.

I go into much more detail about feeding pet rats a raw food diet in my forthcoming book. Check back regularly for details.

Bon appetit!
